Il regno di Lo, ovvero il Mustang, è una piccola enclave himalayana che sulla cartina appare come un dito puntato dal Nepal verso il Tibet. E' un territorio protetto, antico e straordinario per quanto riguarda la gente, la cultura, i panorami, la posizione geografica, il clima, la religione. Isolato per natura e storia dal resto del mondo, questo luogo primitivo e complesso è tuttora preservato dall'assalto del turismo di massa da un limite al numero annuale degli accessi e da una tassa elevata che ogni visitatore deve pagare per entrare. E soprattutto dal fatto che per attraversarlo non esistono strade, e quindi né macchine o altri mezzi meccanici, ma solo sentieri percorribili a piedi o a cavallo e che si snodano tra i 3000 e i 4000 metri di altezza. Seguendo una lunga mulattiera si passa in mezzo a piccoli villaggi, campi coltivati, vallate, canyon e pianori, fiumi gonfi di acqua, microscopici monasteri buddisti celati nelle rocce. Come fosse la spina dorsale di un animale preistorico questa sinuosa via porta fino alla punta estrema del regno e alla sua capitale, Lo Manthang, cittadina tanto umile quanto stupefacente e arcaica dove vivono ancora il re e la regina, nonché punto di arrivo oltre il quale nessun turista si può spingere.
A questa frammento di mondo tibetano in terra nepalese è dedicato il volume "Mustang, a un passo dal cielo" che si avvale di un notevole apparato fotografico di Giampietro Mattolin (che ha scritto anche un diario di bordo del suo viaggio), della esaustiva prefazione di Piero Verni (uno dei giornalisti più preparati su questo angolo himalayano cui, tra l'altro, ha dedicato un fortunato libro) e della coinvolgente testimonianza della giornalista Fiorenza Auriemma. Particolare di primaria importanza: tutti i testi hanno accanto la traduzione in inglese. Immagini e parole riescono a trasmettere la meraviglia e lo stupore che si può ricevere da queste terre e dai suoi abitanti. Il Mustang che questo libro ci mostra è un luogo incantato ai margini delle montagne himalayane e che regala al viaggiatore vette e valli, dove i villaggi ricordano la favola dell'eroe che lotta con il drago per la sua sopravvivenza... con una popolazione povera di monete, ma assai ricca di valori e di dignità.
I paesaggi sono molto belli, ma ad affascinarci sono soprattutto le persone: le donne nei loro vestiti multicolori, i vecchi dall'aspetto di saggi del villaggio e non di rimbambiti come oramai vengono considerati dalle nostre parti, ma soprattutto i bambini, con la loro aria stupita e di innocente. Andare a fare un trekking nella terra del Lo è un desiderio di molti appassionati di montagna, la cui realizzazione resta una mera utopia, però con libri come questo non è difficile potersi immergere nell'atmosfera di misticismo e meraviglia che la circonda. Un bravo va a Mattolin, Verni e Auriemma per offrirci questo lavoro.

The kingdom of Lo, otherwise known as Mustang, is a small Himalayan enclave which on the map looks like a finger pointing from Nepal towards Tibet. It is a protected territory, ancient and extraordinary as regards its people, culture, panoramas, geographical position, climate and religion. Isolated from the rest of the world by nature and history, this primitive yet complex place is still protected from the assault of mass tourism by a limit on the number of annual entries and by a high tax which every visitor must pay to get in - and above all, by the fact that there are no roads crossing it, hence no cars or other motor vehicles, only trails which can be travelled on foot or on horseback, and which twist and turn at an altitude between 3000 and 4000 metres above sea level. Following a long mule track, one travels between small villages, cultivated fields, valleys, canyons and high ground, rivers in full spate, and tiny Buddhist monasteries concealed among the rocks. Like the spine of some prehistoric animal, this winding route leads to the farthest point of the kingdom and to its capital, Lo Manthang, a little town as unpretentious as it is astounding and archaic, where the king and queen still live. This is the point beyond which no tourist is allowed to go.
This fragment of the Tibetan world in Nepalese territory is the subject of the book called "Mustang - one step from the sky." It contains remarkable photographs by Giampietro Mattolin, along with the log book he kept of his journey, a comprehensive foreword by Piero Verni (one of the journalists most knowledgeable about this corner of the Himalayas, concerning which he has written a successful book), and the engaging testimony of the journalist Fiorenza Auriemma. A crucial detail: all the texts have an English translation printed alongside them. The words and images succeed in communicating the wonder and amazement which this land and its inhabitants can inspire. The Mustang which this book reveals is an enchanted country on the fringes of the Himalayan mountains which presents the traveller with peaks and valleys, and villages which recall fables about the hero who fights for survival against the dragon… with a population poor in terms of money, but rich in dignity and values.
The landscapes are very beautiful, but it is the people who fascinate us most: the women in their multicoloured costumes, the old people who look like wise village elders rather than the senile dotards they are considered to be in our world, and above all the children, with their air of wonder and innocence. To go trekking in the land of Lo is an aspiration which many lovers of the mountains will never realize, but with books like this one it is not difficult to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of mysticism and marvel which surrounds the country. Warm congratulations to Mattolin, Verni and Auriemma for offering us this book.
